Regional Youth Grand Prix - Chichester 16/08/08
Posted by OneTrueWarrior
on Sunday, August 17 2008 @ 14:52:57 BST  (9 reads)
Regional News Yvonne writes Yesterday we took 8 of the best Surrey boys off to Chichester to take part in the Regional Youth Grand Prix.
The competition was split into two halfs, being Under 18's and Under 15's.
The following Surrey boys took part:

UNDER 18'S
Steve Petty, George Reeves, Steve Chambers, Liam Pearson

UNDER 15'S
Mike Hope, Luke Garman, Ashley Acton, James Charlwood

The Under 18's were split into 2 'round robins', with both Steve's in Group 1 and George and Liam in Group 2.

Group 1 also contained Joe Prince from London, and Andy Rigby from Hampshire, both experienced players; Joe of course is also an International player.

Group 2 also contained James Green, another very experienced player from Hampshire.

The Under 15's was split into 4 groups with our 4 youngsters all drawn seperately.

The day progressed well, with Dave Tildesley from Sussex running the event.

Surrey ended out with 6, yes 6 out of the 8 players in the finals with the following players going through to Yarmouth for the National finals later in the year.

These were:
Steve Petty, George Reeves, Mike Hope, James Charlwood.

Well done boys, what an absolutely fantastic day!

Surrey vs Hampshire 'A' Team Report
Posted by OneTrueWarrior
on Sunday, August 17 2008 @ 14:49:35 BST  (6 reads)
Inter-County Bluenose writes
After a relatively long break it was County time again in Croydon. The gap at the top of the table stood at just one point as the Surrey side welcomed Hampshire. Possibly looking to recent Kent teams on inspiration on how to beat Surrey, the away team included Neil Ward’s dad in their line-up. The home side also had a surprise in their line-up as both Darren Magor and Lee Hudson were available. This meant Paul Wildman as reserve, with a 50% record including 4 dishes against him, this shows how tough it is to find a place in the team.

The match started well with Jason Norris dishing off his opponents break, followed by one of the missed blacks of the season by the away side which Steve Petty gratefully capitalised on. The team got in to their stride and put some good finishes together to take a 9-2 lead.

A half hour break for food didn’t seem to interrupt the flow of the game as Surrey won 3 of the next four to hold a 12-3 lead. This was always unlikely to continue against the team in third place in the region, as Hampshire battled their way back into contention.

By the end of the third set the gap had narrowed to around 4 frames and the home side knew they had let their opponents back in the match too easily. Knowing what was at stake they re-focused and led by another early finish from Jason Norris and backed up by the determination of Paul Brooks and Lee Hudson, both winning their final frame after 3 losses, they won the last set to finish with a 25-19 victory.

Man of the match went to Jason, with Steve Petty, Darren Magor, Frank Strivens and Rob McGowan also getting 3 out of 4.

A good result for the team, made even better by the news that London had only won 23-21, putting Surrey 1 point ahead in the regional table. A tricky away tie in Berkshire awaits next month, and the team know they need to focus throughout the next 3 matches if they are to give themselves the best chance of securing the Regional title.

Also, some fat bloke was watching our match!! ;)

Surrey vs Hampshire 'B' Team Report
Posted by OneTrueWarrior
on Sunday, August 17 2008 @ 14:42:45 BST  (5 reads)
Inter-County
6 weeks is a long time to wait when you want revenge for a defeat that simply shouldn't have happened, but thats exactly how long Surrey had to wait to exact some kind of revenge for our loss to London in June.

With many of the B team players returning due to work along with Ray Scott back from his shoulder injury, the Surrey B team looked far better on paper than they had going into the match against London. Taking nothing away from the London fellas, who thoroughly deserved to win their match, but Surrey simply weren't as strong as previously and it had shown in their performance.

This month was to be different, this month was all about extending a 10 point lead to somewhere in the region of 15 points. All the Surrey fellas agreed at the beginning of the match that this was the time to step up and make that spot in the 2008 National Finals ours.

The match started well with Ray Scott making short work of his opponent, but being unable to capitalise on mistakes from their opponents, Surrey went 2-1 down in super quick time. Not phased by the speed of the match, Jon Leach, Marc Burnett and Billy Donovan all won their frames to make Surrey 4-2 up and then Danny Evans, Andy Esgrove, Kevin O'Connor and Martin Lambert all won to take the first quarter 8-3.

Keen to be back in the mix of it all, Ray stepped up and took out another excellent finish along with Kyle Pickett, Jon, Marc, Billy, Danny and Kevin making the halfway score 15-7.

After a break for some food, Surrey B came back with even more attack, taking the third quarter 8-3 with wins from Ray, Kyle, Ray Duncan, Billy, Sean Kelly, Danny, Andy and Kevin, getting across the winning line with still one quarter of the match left.

Knowing that London B would surely be breathing down our necks, Surrey had one more final push and managed to take the match 30-14 with yet more good wins from Ray, Ray, Jon, Sean, Danny, Andy and Martin. This result had to push us slightly further in front of London if it was to have been a successful day, but when the report of London B losing to Sussex B came through, it took us to 24 points clear of London and now surely means that Surrey B get to represent Region 7 at the National Finals for an unprecedented 6th straight time.

Player of the match was Ray Scott with a solid performance all day, but there were many good performances on the day.

Next month Surrey travel to Chiswick and take on Berkshire B where the run continues.

See you at the matches.

Surrey vs Hampshire 'Junior' Team Report

Inter-County Yvonne writes
After our disappointing 2nd loss to London in June, we knew that the chances of winning the Region for the fourth time had slipped out of our grasp, but we wanted to continue to put up an impressive performance for the rest of the season, and it was important individually for the boys to work towards England Trials, and a comfortable second place.

After an encouraging team talk by George and myself, we felt confident of a good win over Hampshire, especially when they turned up a player short, with only 10 boys.

The first set we won quite convincingly, 7-4, but the second set slipped completely, and we lost this one by the same margin at 4-7. Considering we were 'given' two of these frames, to hit half time at a draw was absolutley disastarous!

However after the buffet, the boys rallied round, and we eventually won the match 29-15.

The following players achieved 3/4:
Dan Anderson, Steve Chambers, James Charlwood, Luke Garman, Liam Pearson & George Reeves.

Man of the match was Conner Jackson who achieved his first 4/4! Well done Conner, let's see some more of this please x

Surrey vs Hampshire 'C' Team Report

Inter-County Anonymous writes

At the pre-match briefing, I told the players I knew they would all be doing their best to win. When we played Hampshire earlier in the year we beat them 27-17, so our target for today was to win by a better score than that.

We made a fairly slow start, with frames being shared evenly. We were 6-7 down at one point, but then got a small lead and gradually pulled away, so that at 27-15 up it looked as though we were indeed going to beat last time's score.

However the eventual outcome was 27-17 again.

Four players got 4/4, Steve Rains, Brian Petty, Tony Pidgeon, and Eddie Hudson, who got player of the match for his outstanding finish in his penultimate frame, narrowly edging out Jon Prothero who also had to pull out a terriffic shot to pot his last 2 colours in one and get on the black which he potted to win his last frame.

Tolworth Singles Final!... PETTY vs STRIVENS 'The Event'

Tolworth Dave Tink writes
Two of Surrey's finest came head to head to battle it out for the prestigious Tolworth singles title on Saturday 12th July.

Surbiton Town was transformed into a mini crucible for the evening, with over 70 spectators packed into the main hall.

Frank Strivens took part in his first ever final, against hot favourite Steve Petty. The first few games were very equal, but Mr Petty's superb cue control finally got the better of Frank, Steve winning the title for for the 4th time.

Many thanks to our excellent as ever referee, Steve Brooker.

Also a big thank you to Stuart White and all at Surbiton Town, which proved to be a fantastic venue. The singles title was followed by the 2007/2008 presentation evening, with Surbiton Town picking up League Champions and Cup Winners medals.

Dancing followed until midnight, paused only to draw the raffle, many thanks to all for the prizes, although 19 was a touch excessive!

London vs Surrey 'A' Team Report
Posted by OneTrueWarrior
on Tuesday, July 01 2008 @ 10:00:12 BST  (48 reads)
Inter-County Bluenose writes
A day out in Peckham for the boys from Surrey, most arriving early for some practice before the biggest match of the season so far. It was the usual story, London had packed their team full of internationals and professionals and were a few points clear at the top of the table with Surrey needing a win to keep their hopes alive. Lee Hudson continued his time-sharing arrangement with Darren Magor, with the rest of the team unchanged from the previous match.

The lack of pre-match banter and the London team arriving more than 5 minutes before the start showed that both sides were taking it seriously. This was even more evident after just half an hour with the scores at 6-6, 50% of the frames won through dishes, with 3 to each side.

The pace of the game slowed down a touch but was still very competitive as the halfway score stood at 12-10 to Surrey. At this point the away team kicked on, taking a 19-14 lead into the final set.

The team are often strong in the final stages and this looked like it would happen again as dishes from Kennedy and Norris put them on the brink of victory, only for Ramesh to take out possibly the best finish of the day against Paul Wildman, just when his team needed it. Still 7 to play and Surrey needed just 1 to win and a great chance to put some distance between the teams.

London were not finished and more quick wins from Halligan and Kelly stopped a possible hiding, but surely the win was still going to the away side. Each frame slipped away, leaving Nick Booth and Richard Lambert playing with 1 more frame to come. Richard looked in control but his opponent had other ideas and seized an opportunity to leave London just 2 frames away from an improbably draw. On the other table the London player made a mistake leaving Nick with what looked like an easy chance, he didn’t land on the black perfectly but showed his nerve under pressure to take out the long pot and claim victory for Surrey.

Anybody who has seen the London team list will know this was again a great performance from Surrey, numerous people with 3/4. Overall there were at least 15 dishes in the match out of 44 frames, probably more than in the B’s or C’s over a whole season! Both Jason’s finished with 3 wins and 1 dish against, with Retter nudging out Norris to the man of the match trophy.

The 23-21 victory still leaves the team 1 point behind in the race for the title with everything to play for. A long break to the next game with Hampshire visiting Croydon in August.

London vs Surrey 'B' Team Report
Posted by OneTrueWarrior
on Tuesday, July 01 2008 @ 09:59:57 BST  (51 reads)
Inter-County
With half the County season over, the return match against London was on and had now became the biggest match of the season so far.

The London fellas were out for revenge from their massive 29-15 loss earlier in the year against Surrey and they knew that a good win would put them back in the title race, but a loss would put an end to their 2008 season. Surrey, on the other hand, were bouncing back from a disappointing draw last month against Kent and knew that a win today, would almost certainly mean yet another Region 7 Title and equally important, another crack at the National Finals next March.

Surrey also knew that they were missing a few regular B team players like Ray Scott, Danny Evans and Andy Esgrove, to name but a few. With that said though, Surrey was able to call on their 'C' team once again, with Marc Burnett and Sean Kelly returning to the 'B's and Billy Donovan debuting in what can only be described as a baptism of fire.

The match started poorly for Surrey, losing the first two frames. Jon Leach was the first to get Surrey on the scoreboard with a nice finish along with wins from Sean Kelly, Kyle Pickett, Kevin O'Connor and Steve Johnson. At 5-5, Marc Burnett was unable to do anything, having been dished by London's Darren Baker and London took the first quarter 6-5.

Knowing that more was needed, Surrey worked hard to capilalise on any mistakes made. Matt Pisano and Billy Donovan took advantage of chances and Kevin started a four frame win streak with Steve Johnson, Marc Burnett and Martin Lambert all converting their frames to wins as well.

The match sat precariously at 11-11 at the halfway stage and frames continued to be traded backwards and forwards with Matt, Ray Duncan, Billy, Marc, Kevin and Martin winning their frames and taking the lead by one point at the 3/4 stage of the match 16-17.

London were not to be outdone and took the next four frames including a dish against Ray Duncan, pushing the score to 20-17 in their favour. Surrey had been in this same spot last month needing to dig deep and find some form and all the players felt that as much as the London team had played well, this was still Surreys match to win rather than Londons. Marc broke the London winning streak, but Bluey Noel then got dished and Billy was unable to stop his opponent as well, meaning London had at least a draw and one frame more was needed for the win. Kyle was clinical in his finish, but Stevie J just didn't get a proper chance and the match went to London. Kevin and Martin held on and won their two frames including a dish from the Captain
to keep the scoreline respectable, losing their first match of the season 23-21.

Player of the match by a long way was Kevin O'Connor who never really looked in trouble, took his time and punished the opposition when the time was right. Other special mentions should go to Marc Burnett and Martin Lambert for getting three from four and Billy Donovan for getting two from four in his debut for Surrey 'B'.

The result was very disappointing but Surrey still sit 10 points clear at the top of the table in front of London, who now have the difficult job of clawing back 11 frames from the next four matches if they want to win the Region title. With returning players for Surrey next month, that will be difficult as Surrey have their own agenda for the next few games as well.

The next match sees Surrey face Hampshire on the 10th August at the 'Home of Surrey Pool' Riley's Purley Way. If we are to secure a big win there, we need to have a full strength squad without exception and extend the 10 point lead to as many as possible.

Time will tell, see you next month.

  Surrey Ladies v London Ladies
Posted by OneTrueWarrior
on Tuesday, July 01 2008 @ 09:58:13 BST  (49 reads)
Inter-County Luscious writes
Last Sunday Surrey travelled to Peckham to take on local rivals London. In true County style the sun decided to make a very hot and gorgeous appearance, much to everyone's annoyance.

The Ladies had a weaker team than usual and were going to be short, but thanks to Emma Benton (Frank's girlfriend) who kindly agreed to give it a go, although rarely playing the game herself, we did have a full squad in the end.

The most important thing for us today was to win the match. If we failed to do this we risked making it to the Nationals. Although I never doubted for one minute this would be the case, you never know what can happen when you don't have your strongest squad playing.

The first two sets remained quite steady with Surrey just taking the lead by a few frames. But it was in the third and fourth sets that the ladies really started to increase the pressure and get some good wins under their belts.

The final score was 26-18 to Surrey Ladies, a comfortable win in the end. It wasn't an earth shattering result, but it was a good one all the same, and the team spirit was really strong all day. Everyone made Emma feel welcome and boy can the girl fudge, so much so Sarah was worried her nickname may be lost! Here's hoping Emma will come to our trials in January.

Sarah continued with her awesome pool and won another 4 frames, bringing her recent results up to 12/12. Other good performances from regulars Candy (4), Jenny (3), Debbie (3) and Steph (3), with Lauren also finding her form again (4 and POTM).

That's all for now. See you in a few weeks when we take on Hampshire at home.

Inter-County maverick writes
Surrey needed a big performance if they were to banish the shambles of a performance from last month against Kent. However, Surrey got off to the worst possible start losing the first quarter 8-3. Things got slightly better in the second with Surrey taking it 6-5 to trail 14-8 at the halfway stage.

It is usually about this time that Surrey find there cues and start playing, and it was going to prove to be the case again today, Surrey took the third quarter 8-3 to only trail 17-16 at the start of the final session.

A good start was required if we were to take the match, however London won the first two frames to give them a vital three frame buffer with nine frames left to play Surrey could only let London win two more frames if we were to walk away with the victory. Surrey fought back winning the next four frames including a break and dish from captain Dan Barthrop at 19-18 down, Surrey won 2 out of the next 3 frames to lead 22-20 with Scott Lee and Simon Le Marchant left to try and secure the most unlikely of wins. Simon fell just short after running out of position and leaving himself a very tough black, but fortunately Scott pulled out his best frame of the day to give Surrey victory.

Some performances of note, all of the players today deserve special mention as for the first time when we were behind we got behind each other and showed some proper support for each other and played as a proper team. No 4 out of 4s today, but there were three 3 out of 4s, Dave Jones, Tony Pigeon on his Surrey debut and man of the match for Simon Le Marchant.

London vs Surrey Juniors Team Report
Posted by OneTrueWarrior
on Tuesday, June 24 2008 @ 16:06:28 BST  (121 reads)
Inter-County Yvonne writes
The Surrey Juniors went to Peckham today knowing that we needed a substantial win to retain the Regional title for another year, but London have a very large enthusiastic Junior squad now and we are struggling to get a team out this year.

However we were hopeful that we could put up a good fight.

The first set saw us creep ahead at 3-2, but London then managed to turn up the pressure and we ended that first set 8-3 down. Things turned completely in the second set and we went from 9-3 down to 12-10 up. With this sort of momentum we wanted to keep going, but London insisted on a break at this point for a 'team talk'.

Fair enough, we often want to rally the troops ourselves at this point, but they seemed to sort themselves out, and after a scappy few games where the scoreline remained neck and neck, we lost the plot and they managed to beat us 25-19.

There were several disappointing performances today from players that should be producing better results with only 2 of the boys getting 3 out of 4. Man of the match today was Steve Chambers, who fought an excellent fight, and was absolutely gutted not to get his 4th frame.
The most disappointing thing though, was the ridiculous amount of noise and disrespect from the London boys again. Boys, you're good players, you don't need to do this!

Kent vs Surrey 'A' Team Report
Posted by OneTrueWarrior
on Thursday, June 19 2008 @ 22:11:30 BST  (55 reads)
Inter-County Bluenose writes
An away trip to Chatham is normally a day to forget for the Surrey A team, this time had to be different if they were to continue the battle with London for the regional title.

The team went into the match confident after 2 big wins and knowing that the Kent team were well understrength from previous years.

The usual start to the match, Ian Hubbard dishes and Surrey go on to trail 3-1, with the first 3 frames of the match all being dishes. However, Surrey hit 8 on the spin to get a healthy lead. This lead was stretched as Surrey continued with the dishing to take a massive 16-6 lead at the halfway stage.

At this point the team seemed to switch off slightly, whether it was the big lead, the recent big results, or the interruptions from the b-team, it is impossible to know but some loose shots saw Kent get an interest back in the game.

The team regrouped, and despite a couple of unusual unforced errors in the last couple of frames finished with a 27-17 win. A superb win given the history between these two teams. Tom Kennedy and Richard Lambert both got the maximum 4 frames, with Tom edging the man of the match award.

Despite only drawing the second half of the match 11-11 and hearing London's outrageous score, the team are still well within distance and go to Peckham confident they can reverse the score from earlier in the year.
